Last Sunday, something special happened in Kanglaung. More than 32 children from Lahu community came together to celebrate World Environment Day: planting a coffee tree and imagine the future they want to help create.

Local Action, Global Impact
As part of our contribution to World Environment Day 2026, Cafe Lahu registered the activity "One Child, One Coffee Tree, One Future" on the official World Environment Day platform, joining thousands of environmental initiatives taking place across the world. For our community, this is more than a registration. For the children of Kanglaung, it is a reminder that the actions of a small Lahu village in northern Thailand can contribute to a global movement working towards a more sustainable future.

Learning about our planet
The day began with an environmental awareness session led by Mei, who introduced the children to World Environment Day and explored important challenges such as plastic pollution and global warming. Through videos, discussion, and interactive questions, the children learned how their everyday actions can help protect the environment around them.
Wisdom from the elders
One of the most meaningful moments came when village elder Nahae eh shared memories of her childhood. She described a time when the forests surrounding Kanglaung were denser, greener, and full of life. Her stories offered the children a glimpse into the past and reminded all of us that sustainability is not only about protecting the future; it is also about remembering and valuing what came before.
Dreaming of Tomorrow
Inspired by her words, the children drew pictures of the village they hope to see in the years ahead. They imagined a community where people and nature thrive together. Some then stood up to present their drawings and share their dreams.
Kanoknut spoke about becoming a doctor to care for people in the community. Arisa dreamed of becoming a teacher. Songgran hoped to become a police officer. Listening to them was both inspiring and humbling. Despite the challenges they face, their ambitions remain strong, generous, and full of hope.

Planting for the future
After lunch, each child selected a young coffee tree and walked together to a special place at the heart of the village: the entrance to the Lahu Traditional Spiritual House. We choose this location intentionally. The Spiritual House is a place that represents identity, tradition, and connection between generations. By planting the coffee trees there, we hope the children will be able to visit them often, care for them, and watch them grow over the years. As the children grow, the trees will grow alongside them, a living reminder of their dreams and their commitment to the future.
Turning awareness into action
The afternoon continued with a village clean-up activity. Together, the children collected plastic waste from both sides of the village road, transforming environmental awareness into practical action. It was a simple but powerful lesson: caring for nature begins with caring for the place we call home.
Reflextions and commitments
To close the day, the children gathered in a circle and reflected on what they had learned. Some shared that they now better understood the meaning of environmental protection. Others promised they would always dispose of rubbish properly. Many spoke passionately about protecting forests and never cutting down trees unnecessarily.

As they returned home with snacks, smiles, and muddy hands, they left behind something far more important than footprints.
They left behind young coffee trees. And with them, seeds of hope for a greener future.
At Cafe Lahu, we believe that meaningful change begins with small actions: One child, One coffee tree, One future.
